Re:Engage TNG

Riker is dying from an attack on his leg from something living on an unexplored planet. The stakes are set ridiculously high, but it's ruined by a large portion of the episode playing through clips of Riker fightin' and f**kin' from the past two seasons. The crew had to produce this one on a shoestring budget and it shows. Greg hosts Re:Engage's own little bit of a clip show as we talk through some of our own favorite moments from s1 & s2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and give shout-outs to some of our listeners. Erik says goodbye to Diana Muldaur as Dr. Pulaski, Jimmie thinks this episode is only slightly better than the more racist ones, and Kate wanted this episode to morph into Star Trek Acid Party. Don't we ALL, Kate!
Re:Engage will be taking a short break from publishing episodes. We'll be back with the premiere of season three of TNG in January 2022!
In the meantime, we want to hear more from you! Feedback or questions we can read aloud and answer on episodes can be sent to our email letsReengage@gmail.com, or you can message us on Twitter @ReEngageTNG!

Strategema Tournament in Ten Forward! One of Trek's most annoying characters ever is on the Enterprise to run some war games between Picard and Riker. The commander assembles his team of Geordi, Worf, and Wesley on an old ship previously captained by Buckaroo Bonsai. Meanwhile, Data can't beat the gamemaster Kolrami, and Pulaski's meddling means Data isn't sure if he is fit for service. Picard and the Ferengi who show up need him in fighting shape. Jimmie hosts this episode, Kate digs Kolrami's whole schtick, and Erik enjoys making fun of Greg's terrible pronunciation of Martina Navratilova.

The Iceman Cometh! After playing poker and some tricky tractor beaming, Worf gets to explore his relationship with K'Ehleyr. She's a fast-talking career half-Klingon girl who had a connection to Worf back in the day. K'Ehleyr tells Picard that there's a Klingon ship that's been on the same mission since the Federation was still at war with them, so the Enterprise is sent to deal with them. K'Ehleyr wants to blow 'em up, but after "working out" with Worf on some personal issues in the holodeck, they save the day with some bluster. Kate hosts this episode and has an affinity to K'Ehleyr, Erik thinks the fights in the holodeck weren't rehearsed enough, Jimmie can't pronounce the name of the Klingon ship, and Greg can't wait for the fruit of this episode re-enters the series in the person of Alexander.

The Return of Lwaxana Troi, Dixon Hill, and special guest Cicero Holmes in the same episode?! Uh-mazing! The Enterprise is prepared for some fishy dignitaries, yet not prepared for the storm of a Betazed woman going through her "Phase." Lwaxana has chosen her mate, but the Captain dodges that bullet by dodging bullets in the holodeck as his favorite hard-boiled detective. It all gets resolved, including the reveal that Mick Fleetwood is a stone cold assassin. Don't worry, it all makes sense in the end. Kind of. Greg hosts this episode and covers for Erik as he works Off-Broadway, Kate admires the silverware, Jimmie doesn't care for Lwaxana's abuse, and Cicero pours one out for Geordi, who doesn't appear in this episode, sadly.

It seems the space Irish don't mix well with asexual cloners. The Enterprise saves a centuries-old human colony from the European Union, er, Hegemony which is inhabited only by American stereotypes of Irish people. It's lazily played for laughs, and Riker enjoys some sexy times from a fiery guest star, but then the episode takes a turn where the sister colony's prime minister steals Riker and Pulaski's DNA. Oops! Let's abort those clones quick. Then they all decide to force these two peoples to breed, which feels wrong on multiple levels. Kate hosts and makes sure to note how Pulaski and Worf smash, Jimmie has feelings for Riker, Erik says his people don't always need their whiskey, and Greg's nostalgia for this episode gets the better of him.

We want to make our ship go to awkward conversations. The Pakleds are the big bad, which is kind of a let down after the Borg honestly. Picard has to get a procedure done (hint: it's not bowel related) and that means he's trapped telling Wesley about his life in a shuttlecraft. Riker and Geordi try to help the cunning Pakleds, but don't listen to some very reasonable warnings from Worf and Troi. Pulaski saves the day after some fine medical babble form our guest stars, while Wesley and Picard bury the hatchet. Jimmie hosts this episode that establishes a whole lot of "Canon!", Kate is concerned about reading in the dark, Erik points out the politics, and Greg just wants to eat sandwiches with the Captain.

Aliza Pearl (@alizapearl on Twitter & IG) is an actor, writer, cosplayer and gamer and she joins the cultural bridge crew to talk about one of the gems of the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. John DeLancie returns as Q, but now with Guinan aboard we have a whole lot more context for his imp-ery. Whoopi Goldberg serves exposition as expertly as Guinan serves Romulan Ale, and she's the first to utter the name of the most terrifying villains in sci-fi - the Borg. The Borg visit the Enterprise and get blasted by Worf, and Riker visits the Borg cube to meet some very cute babies. In the end it's all about Picard and Q dancing on the stage, but Aliza has some great ideas on how to expand the storyline of Guinan and Q that I certainly hope gets transported to Paramount+ soon. Greg hosts this episode, Jimmie loves these bad guys, Kate digs how Q both lounges and chews on the scenery, Erik waxes poetic on stunt men, and Aliza is a joyful font of insight. We can't wait for her to return! (Kinda like the Borg...)

Screw the Prime Directive! I've had it up to here! During a geological survey headed up by young Wesley of a system where the planets "live hard and die young" (Thanks Riker!) Data strikes up a conversation. That leads to the A plot of the crew debating whether to intervene and save young guest star Nikki Cox's people, while the B plot is Wesley managing the difficulties of managing. It all works out in the end, but not before we get some choice lines from Worf and Pulaski. Jimmie hosts this episode full of laughs, Greg keeps calling the Prime Directive the First Amendment, Kate really likes Picard's jodhpurs, and Erik discovered Monster Squad and you should too. Everybody Loves Kyle Riker! Except for his son, well, at least until they swing big sticks at each other. After learning a little bit about Riker's childhood in the previous episode, we meet his father who comes along with great news: Star Fleet is offering Riker command of the USS Aries. The problem is that's in the middle of nowhere and Riker doesn't want to talk to his dad about the assignment. Kyle does talk to Dr. Pulaski, who would have married him in a hot minute. Meanwhile, Worf is acting all weird and Wesley is on the case to figure out that he just wants to be hit with painstiks in front of his family. All's well in this episode hosted by Kate and she ships Riker/Deanna hardcore while Jimmie is obsessed with Pulaski's many marriages, Erik loves the fight in the Anbo-jiutsu court, and Greg thinks Kyle Riker is a piece of shit.

Two Picards are better than one! It turns out that's not actually true as the Enterprise encounters one of its own shuttle pods with an unresponsive but alive second Picard inside. And the pod is from the future - six hours in the future to be exact. The crew grapples with the strange knowledge that the ship will be destroyed with Opposite Day Picard as the sole survivor. There are plot holes galore that should have been filled with Q in the original story concept for this one, but in exchange we get good performances during several silent, tense shots. Jimmie hosts this one and loves the techno-babble, Kate is souring (again) on Pulaski, Erik is here the musical score, and Greg thinks O'Brien is a changed man after witnessing his captain phaser himself. That came out wrong.
